Pottery and Wheel Throwing

I have been working with clay for almost two decades and specialize in functional forms such as cups and mugs. A mug is probably my favorite thing to make and I love making handles specialized for an individuals hand. I also tend to work with dots, carved rims, and layered earthy glazes. Bowls are so much more complex than they seem and a real challenge to make the shape stackable but also maintain a perfectly smooth curved interior. I tend to style my bowls in a similar way to mugs with carving on the exterior and layering two or three different glazes to create unique combinations. I've most often made big sets of kitchenware as gifts for a special occasion like a wedding. I do also like to make matching sets of cups, bowls, and plates to see how well I can match shape, color, etc. across the multiple forms.

Handbuilding and Sculpture

When I started ceramics as a high school student I did mostly sculpture - which is probably the best way to learn to work with clay as a medium. Nowadays I rarely make anything non-functional but have tried to get back into handbuilding by making little critter jars.

My Ceramics Process

In ceramics your tools are so often an extension of your arm, and I've had most of my precious tools for at least 10 years! It's also nice to see some work in progress images because clay is so transformative and looks entirely different at every stage of the process from greenware, to bisque, and finally when glazed. It has taken me a long time to understand those changes intimately and how to work not only with raw clay but with clay transformed into ceramic wares through those extreme temperatures. It's something I'll be learning forever but that is why I love ceramics so much, it's different every day.
