Exhibition Highlights

I have worked on dozens of exhibitions, some of which I am particularly proud of due to their innovations, complexity, artist relationships, or the new skills I acquired. Below are some examples of projects that hold a special significance to me.

Preparation / Production

Working as a preparator since 2016 I have assisted in the production, fabrication, and installation of many exhibitions, everything from artwork to natural history specimens, cat sculptures to model aircraft. This work includes: extensive art handling, preparing galleries, lighting design, installing vinyl decals and text panels, preparing furniture, fabricating acrylic and brass mounts, sculpting foam mannequins, hanging paintings, and much more. I have also worked on designing exhibition layouts and prototyping, picking up artworks from lenders, and packing and unpacking artworks for transport and loans.

I've gotten to experience hanging/installing artwork in all kinds environments including international airport terminals, public libraries, art fairs, private residences, office spaces, and of course art galleries and museums. I'm at ease loading and driving trucks, hanging large works on ladders, and quickly measuring to mount hanging hardware.

From the registration and collections management side of exhibit work, I have assisted in the processing of hundreds of objects on and off exhibit. This included cleaning objects, condition reporting, freezing objects for pest mitigation, updating locations and records, relabelling, remounting and dismantling mounts, and overseeing installations.

Exhibition Design

SketchUp is one of my favorite 3D modeling programs to use for designing or prototyping an exhibition space. These are some examples of projects in which I have used SketchUp to visualize my end goal and pitch it to internal and external stakeholders and fabricators. Other examples of design work include specialized lighting design, exhibition feature designs, and artwork layout designs.

Some key projects featured are my design of an exhibition I curated called Weaving the World Into a Basket (2016) , a pop-up citizen science exhibition in a student lounge, and a new museum proposal as part of my coursework in exhibition design.

Display Fixtures and Mount-Making

I am experienced in fabricating all kinds of mounts for 2D and 3D works including brazing custom brass mounts, plexiglass/acrylic mounts, pins, paddles, inserts and mannequins. I am also comfortable using various hanging hardware, various barrier materials, and poly strapping books and paper materials. I particularly enjoy fauxing/painting mounts to match the artwork and working on really complex problem solving. I constantly preach about the importance of documentation, templating, and labelling mounts so that information is not lost through the process. I have also taught workshops and webinars on mount-making for collections and exhibits.
